Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural management.
