They're Doing in America What They Did within Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and defining instances – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of multiple weeks, the US president started showing all observers his designs for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions than the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing portion to build it.

He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of fatalities resulting from his reductions to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and recently research projected his energy policies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted – genuinely, no other president would have contemplated – solo demolishing major areas of the presidential residence to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, the majority of whom have business with the government.

We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' toward 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'

As confusing as it is to watch the leader try to upend the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment among Americans who should not find it completely novel. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have witnessed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we learned about into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of animosity who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in scripture; this has happened more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Jesus that I grew up with, because theoretically Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and given that the rapidly expanding group among Americans could have minimal awareness of him since they are non-believers or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that there are pearls of great price within Christian narrative.

It is unquestionably not the account of an authoritative monarch emerging; rather, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to avoid undercover officers. The infant develops in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his message is about love for other people, especially for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Christ's response to aggression is to offer the other cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a method to instruct the assailant; his crime policy indicates that whenever a person pilfers your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing too.

The evident and direct fact that the Jesus from scripture requests a form of profound affection focused on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith somewhat of a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but because of its natural unconventionality demanding to be controlled. In the fifties it was controlled by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Battle for the Highest Within Us

So I have been inspired to witness the persistent defiance against Trump emerge in this past year. It has served as substantial consolation to participate in developing the initiative that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated voters to participate in significant amounts in interim political contests. We shall require to continue it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners at every demonstration and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or refuse?

America is best defended, to put it differently, through connection to the finest within national tradition, just as Christianity is best defended by reference to elements that cause it to be special and magnificent, specifically the model of Jesus. In all circumstances does it mean acting as if the worst regarding America and Christian faith never occurred; it means both meekness and faith, a mixture that serious US believers should embrace.
